How To Schedule Your Time: Making Your Days Count

diary-614149_1920

Hello, everybody, I have been struggling with this concept for a while now as you all know. I have both a YouTube Channel and this blog plus everyday life that I must juggle.

I decided to do some research on how to get myself on track and wanted to share with you what I found out.

Perhaps you could use some of this information in your life too and we could get ourselves better organized together.

Life is busy. Now there is an understatement if I ever heard one! There is so much to do that we must somehow find time to cram into our day if we want to get everything done.

The question is how? I found out the very first step to organizing your time is to make a list of all the things you want or need to accomplish.

We need to define the problem in order to find a solution.

Okay, here is what my list looks like; at least all that I can think of at this moment. I may add more items later if I suddenly remember more.

Make YouTube videos – various topics

Write posts for my blog -various topics

Practice my mandolin

Answer Emails (from YouTube and my blog)

Do dishes

Make the bed

Do laundry

Make meals

Sweep and wash the floors

Play with RCs (sometimes I want to just for fun and not always for videos)

Clean the church

Attend church

Read books

Surf the internet

Sleep

Phew!! I am getting exhausted just looking at that list; no wonder I have trouble getting it all done. Is your list as long as mine? Or longer?

Next step? Prioritize; what must get done (needs) and what you want to do for yourself or others (wants)

the-action-plan-1429834_1920

NEED : Make YouTube videos -various topics

NEED: Write posts for my blog -various topics

NEED: Practice my mandolin

NEED: Answer Emails (from YouTube and my blog)

NEED: Do dishes

NEED: Make the bed

NEED: Do laundry

NEED: Make meals

NEED: Sweep and wash the floors

WANT: Play with RCs (sometimes I want to just for fun and not always for videos)

WANT: Clean the church

WANT: Attend church

WANT: Read books

WANT: Surf the internet

NEED: Sleep

All right, now we are getting somewhere. I have ten items on my NEED list and five items on my WANT list. It’s okay; no need to make sure there are even amounts on both lists.

Different activities take different amounts of time. Besides, I am sure you can expand your wants to fill any time not taken by your needs. LOL 😉

Now we get down to the nitty gritty and figure out how long and how often each thing takes. An average is okay; no need to define your schedule down to the last minute or second.

It is not nice to put that much pressure on yourself!

NEED : Make YouTube videos -various topics  (this one varies as some videos are easier to make than others. I will call this 2 hours and it needs to happen every day). If I get a lot accomplished I will simply add them to scheduled videos and get ahead of the game.

NEED: Write posts for my blog -various topics (strangely enough this is the same as videos and I will schedule 2 hours every day for this one too). If I get a lot accomplished I will simply add them to scheduled posts and get ahead of the game.

NEED: Practice my mandolin (I should be practicing every day or two for 20 minutes to 30 minutes). Let’s call it 30 minutes for sake of fitting it into the schedule more consistantly.

NEED: Answer Emails (from YouTube and my blog) (I could easily spend hours upon hours keeping up with comments on both my channel and my blog but being reasonable I will devote 1 hour to this task every day so it doesn’t get backed up too far).

NEED: Do dishes (I do dishes once a day after dinner. They take 20 minutes to 30 minutes since I handwash – I don’t have a dishwasher).

NEED: Make the bed. (This one is easy – under five minutes and every morning when I get out of bed.)

NEED: Do laundry. (Usually I do laundry on weekends when hydro is cheaper but the odd weeknight I will have a load that I do at night after 7pm – again to save on hydro. Wash and dry  1 -1 1/2 hours).

NEED: Make meals ( Most meals I make take no longer than 30 minutes to cook and I do that  three times a day if I am lucky; quite often it is twice a day.)

NEED: Sweep and wash the floors (This chore takes me 1 hour and I do it once a week).

WANT: Play with RCs (sometimes I want to just for fun and not always for videos) (As I was saying when it comes to wants I could expand to whatever time is available to me). I would be happy with twice a week.

WANT: Clean the church (This happens once a week – usually on a Friday and it takes my husband and I 30 minutes to tackle all the chores together).

WANT: Attend church (Also once a week, from 11 A.M. – 12:30 P.M. every Sunday) This can expand to 10 A.M. – 12:30 P.M. when hubby is on stage and I run the soundboards to allow for setup time and brief rehearsal)

WANT: Read books (LOL, any chance I get and for however long I can. I have been known to read for hours at a time.)

WANT: Surf the internet  (same as above only surfing the net instead of reading books.)

NEED: Sleep (This has to happen every night. I try to get at least 6 hours of sleep).

Finally, we are at the stage of putting all of this planning down onto a weekly schedule. A quick chart to post on the fridge would be handy to keep things in mind as you go about your day.

If you work outside the home of course work will also be on your schedule and must be accounted for if you like to do things like eat and have a place to live.

A daytimer or appointment book is useful to keep tabs on what you need to do and when but also consider your smartphone. They are handy and can be set to vibrate or sound an alert when it is time to switch activities.

I believe I will be posting on the fridge and setting my smartphone up as reminders. That way wherever I am I will have my schedule with me.

So, in conclusion, I have tallied up the figures on the various things I need to get done and I can get it all done in 14 hours per day and that includes my 6 hours of sleep a night.

Out of a 24 hour day that leaves me with 10 hours to sprinkle in some “me time” and the things I want to do; that make me happy and fulfilled as a person.

I have just set up all of the “events” on my phone. I now have the times blocked out and can see that there are gaps of an hour here and there throughout in which I can choose to do something off my wants list.

I am not putting down anything in particular for these times but instead will allow myself to gravitate toward whatever I feel like at the time.

This way my wants won’t become another “chore”.

I will write another post to update you on how things are working out for me in about a months time.

That gives me four weeks to get into the routine of things and accurately judge how well it is working; productivity wise and satisfaction wise.

There is one thing I would like to know; if you would be so kind as to leave me a comment, do you have a schedule to get everything done or do you fly by the seat of your pants as I have been doing all this time?

Thank you for once again visiting my blog to read my thoughts today. I do appreciate all the support, my friends. 🙂

Now, this is Heaven!

Hi, welcome back to my blog. Today’s post was inspired by…you guessed it, 365 Days of Writing Prompts. =)

Writing Room

A genie has granted your wish to build your perfect space for reading and writing. What’s it like?

Thank you so very much, Genie. I have always wanted a room like this and you have just given me a little piece of heaven here on earth.

I am going to spend many, many hours in here reading and writing to my heart’s content. Trust me Genie; my heart is now content.

I love the way you made this room look; I told you what I wanted but you managed to make it even better than I imagined.

The paint on the walls and the ceiling is a wonderful shade of blue; really solid and not hard on the eyes at all. I love this shade of blue genie…it is perfect and makes me feel so relaxed. This is the color of a beautiful summer sky.

Oh, look! The trim around the doorways and that big picture window is white just like the clouds. I love how the window looks out across the country field.

I see there is a beautiful reading nook over there in the corner where I can curl up on the faded denim covered mattress with a book. All those pillows make it so inviting.

It is a perfect combination for me; if I feel sleepy while reading I can place my bookmark and just close my eyes. You’ve remembered how fond I am of reading before sleep.

Thank you for building in a light above that relaxing spot so my eyes don’t get tired too quickly.

I especially like all the plush tapestry covered pillows you put in there too; it looks so comfortable. They are thick and fluffy making me want to lean back and relax.

That is ingenious (pardon my play on words at your expense Genie) having the bookshelves run all the way up to either side of my cozy little nook.

Oh my, the shelves are made out of beautiful oak; I can see the vibrant grain pattern in the wood too.

My books will always be handy to grab and so easy to put away when I am done with them. All of my books are awaiting me on the shelves, I see, and it was so nice of you to organize them alphabetically too.

The floor is covered with a green shag rug that reminds me so much of the grass just outside my window. It is even the same shade as the grass out there.

Even when the snow piles up in drifts out there I have the heavenly days of summer in here. I will have to remind myself I do not ever need to cut this grass.

Thanks, for the gorgeous cream-colored marble fireplace with oak shelf, that matches my bookshelves, down there at the end of the room.

The big comfy tub chair in front of it  and the blue Hume tartan throw are beckoning me to come snuggle up. I will never be cold in here.

There is lots of space for my writing in this room too. The glass desk by the window is big enough to fit my all in one computer, keyboard, and mouse on it.

That was an excellent choice making the desk out of glass. It just about disappears in the room instead of dominating it. I feel like I am sitting in a field writing; what a freeing feeling.

How clever you are Genie, I see you have wired the lamp on my desk right into the house wiring down there on the floor by the table leg. That is brilliant; no cords to trip over!

The chair you have paired with the table is a perfect choice as well; very comfortable and yet sturdy. Very funny Genie, I know you couldn’t make the chair out of glass too.

Aww, I appreciate that coaster for my tea mug you placed beside the keyboard for me. Genie, you think of every small detail even when it comes to things I have forgotten to ask for. You are so good to me.

You know how I enjoy not only blogging but working on my manuscript as well. I am not sure a publisher will ever deem it worthy of publication.

I can’t help it Genie; this book is waiting inside and my soul demands it  be written down. This autobiography of mine will be hard to classify, though; should it be shelved with the fiction or non-fiction?

Oh, you don’t understand what I mean? Wait until you read it Genie, just wait…you’ll see. Some of my experiences people will think I made up but I can assure you I did not.

Tall torchiere lamps have taken up their sentry duty in each corner of the room to provide indirect light that will give the room a warm glow rather than harsh lighting.

I really like the elegant brass lamps at my table, by my tub chair, and over my reading nook as well. My eyes thank you as they won’t have to strain to see when I am reading or writing.

Bravo Genie, you have outdone yourself making this room a reality for me. I am so happy here and can’t wait to get started exploring each small detail, then, I really must get down to work.

Self Imposed Deadlines & Expectations

Why do I do this to myself? No, really, why do I put this pressure on myself? Well, I suppose the answer to that is, I guess, I work better under pressure. Left to my own devices I will delay and procrastinate but if I set something in motion I am more apt to keep going and make it happen.

This is something I have found out about myself through trial and error in my life. If I am reluctant to start or follow through with something I will do or say something that will ensure I HAVE to start it or follow through with it.

Okay, I see you scratching your head in confusion so I will give you some examples in an effort to be clearer. Say I am reluctant to see the dentist because I know there is a filling that needs attention and there is some pain in my future. I will call and make an appointment for a date some week or two later. The way this works is I will be more reluctant to call and cancel or reschedule because I would feel ashamed knowing that I was wussing out instead of doing the adult thing and getting my teeth taken care of. So, I would follow through and show up for that appointment and face it rather than face the failure that cancelling the appointment would represent.

I have called the doctor’s office to make an appointment to  discuss something embarrassing (to me) with the doctor. When I am taking to the nurse/receptionist and I am asked what the appointment is for (they always ask because that way they know how long and how urgent the reason for the booking is) I will blurt out the reason. It is on the phone and the nurse/receptionist is ALWAYS too busy with the other lines ringing to ask too many questions. I hang up the phone knowing that I have set something in motion that I will have to deal with at a later date. Full stop. Upon seeing the doctor he will look at his computer screen and bring the topic up, asking for further information about the subject.

Well, I have done it once (twice?) again. Finally, we arrive at the true subject matter of this blog post. I have a YouTube channel as well as this blog. I want to keep both running smoothly providing consistent content to keep my subscribers and followers entertained. I have discovered scheduling and it is glorious! =D

So I now have videos uploaded and scheduled to go live every day on my YouTube channel. I have two videos waiting for tomorrow and the next day. As for this blog, I have two to three posts waiting to be published every third day. You will notice I have added the announcement on the top of the page to remind me and keep the pressure up on myself to follow through and make it happen. I have even placed a calendar widget along the right-hand side for posting dates. The days that a post is published the date will be highlighted and is clickable to take you straight to that day’s post.

Oh, one last thing. Those little guys up there in the pictures? The first picture is how I see myself with YouTube pulling me one way and this blog pulling me the other way. I have to divide my time between them because I love doing both! The second picture represents how I see myself…I am the one turning the handle on the vice but it is for the best possible reasons. When I look back on things I am very happy now that both of my endeavours are now being produced consistently. It sure feels better than beating myself up and kicking myself because I haven’t posted in a while or added to my YouTube channel enough to keep people interested and happy they subscribed.

Thanks for dropping by my blog again, friends. I do appreciate it when you like and comment on my writing. I have a question for you, do you do this sort of thing to yourself? Are you pretty consistent with getting things done normally or do you feel the need to sabotage yourself like I do? =) Have a good one!

Work Never Ends…

Mug_icon

There are old adages that state things like “No rest for the wicked or the wise” and “A woman’s work is never done” or something like that and today I have to admit it is so true! I have another huge To Do list today and some of it will end up being cycled onto tomorrow’s To Do list because that is usually the way it goes. *sigh* To give you an idea of what I have on my list to tackle these are today’s entries:

  • Do the dishes
  • Write a blog post (doing that now, thanks list for reminding me) LOL
  • Wash walls and counters in kitchen in prep for painting the walls
  • Make breakfast
  • Make lunch
  • Make dinner
  • Vacuum all rugs
  • Make bed
  • Catch up on emails
  • Make a shout out video for my YouTube channel
  • Edit video
  • Upload video
  • Share video all over social media
  • Go back check on email again
  • Play Minecraft and work out how to mount a horse (or pig apparently LOL)
  • Make a video showing how to mount a horse when you figure it out, yes, for YouTube
  • Check out some blogs – follow and/ or comment on them
  • Go back and check email again….there should be more emails to answer by now
  • Watch some TV to relax
  • Play some games online to just have fun
  • Do laundry
  • Go to bed
  • Get up tomorrow and do it all again!

This list may seem simplistic and simplified but all of this takes time. For example, when I check my email I usually get around 60- 100 emails per shot. Some require me to watch some other You Tubers video and comment on it or like it (or both). Some are comments or questions on my YouTube videos that people have sent me that I must answer back. It is important to stay connected and involved with your subscribers to continue to grow your channel. These emails can chew up a good one and a half to two hours easily. Housework, as we are all well aware, never ends. You can do all of the laundry in the house…get ready for bed and BAM!! more laundry. =( Prepare and eat a meal…and BAM!! more dishes. While I am busy building my You Tube Channel and starting this whole blogging adventure this is my life. Don’t get me  wrong I love it…I like all of it, every facet. I am just trying to let you see the other side of the computer screen – a little look into my life and what it involves just focusing on these two things – You Tube and Blogging. This is my choice though and I am not complaining at all. I am my own boss, I set my hours and am free to come and go as I please without punching a time clock or requesting time off. This, my friends, is the life! I love it all…creating videos for You Tube and writing on this blog. I meet new people through the internet and in person when hubby and I go RCing at our local parks, hiking trails, beaches and so on. Not sure what RCing is….please check out my You Tube channel for examples straight from my videos. I have a page on this blog with all my social links – you will find my link to my You Tube there.

Thanks for checking in with me again. It is always nice to see you here. I must close for now though and get back to striking things off my list. LOL Until next time…be good to each other. Life is hard enough! =)
