Hey, I Want To Share An Idea With You!

For a while now I have been doing some serious thinking. Mostly it has been on the subject of New Years Goals and Intentions; read my last post to see what goals I settled on there.

The other thing I have been thinking about lately has been whether or not to attempt writing a book. Yes, I do want to write a novel one day or a memoir.

Those two choices would take a substantial amount of time and are more complex than I am thinking about committing to right now.

I need something to, in a sense, dip my toes in as an introduction to the world of writing. In the interim, I would like to try my hand at writing a children’s book.

I am wondering how hard a market that would be to break into but it has all the hallmarks of a wonderful project.

Writing a children’s book would combine two of my passions in one project; writing and drawing. I would have to come up with an outline of something that would be of interest to children.

I would want to make it different enough to stand out against all the children’s books out there.

The beauty of a large picture book like this is that it would be fairly short but that being said I would want it to spark a child’s imagination even though it would be short.

The thing that really started to turn up the desire to do this was when my grandson came to visit us on Christmas Day.

This idea occurred to me a long while ago but Christmas Day intensified it and really brought home the immediacy of such a project.

This has to happen soon since my grandson will remain a little guy only for so long. Already at two and a half he is growing so fast and saying a few words now.

The window of opportunity to write for him is only so long. Even if my first book is written and illustrated just for him. I could write another to get published for the general public afterward.

How special would that be to have Grandma write a storybook just for you?

I wished with all my heart that I had a big beautiful book to share with him. I want him to enjoy reading as much as I do and the idea of writing a book for that purpose just inspires me.

I think of some of the great authors of children’s books like Dr. Seuss and Robert Munsch. That kind of great authorship is what I am shooting for!

Perhaps tomorrow will find me sitting down to sketch out a few ideas as to subject matter and a vague outline to flesh out.

One of my New Year Goals is to spend one day a week doing artwork or creative projects for either my YouTube channel or here on my blog or both!

Could this be the subject of my first weekly creative artwork I set for one of my goals this year?

What do you think about me doing this? Would you be interested in seeing some sketches and ideas as I work this out on paper and not just spinning around and around in my mind?

Your input and opinions would be most welcome as I try to figure out just what this book for Ethan would look like.

In order to fit this into the short window of opportunity I have to get it into my grandson’s hands I would have to actually produce a single true original book that I could then ship to him via the mail.

After this is accomplished I could then take the time and follow the proper steps to find a way to get a children’s book published for the public.

It might even help sell my idea to a publisher if I could point to the one I made for Ethan and how he responds to it.

The more I am sharing this idea with you all the more real it is becoming. It is no longer just a private thought in my mind. This desire, goal, intention is now out there and I find my pulse quickening a bit.

Yes, I am a little afraid as well as excited at the possibilities.

Will my drawings be good enough? What about the story or theme of the book, will it be something Ethan would want to have read to him? Or will he want to get down and play with his toys on the floor?

Would you let me know in the comments what your thoughts are? I know the decision is ultimately up to me but I guess what I am asking is would you be interested in seeing some ideas and sample drawings?

Do any of you out there have young children or grandchildren? If so what kinds of books are they interested in? Do they like stories or simple learning books on colors or the alphabet?

Thank you in advance for your responses. I appreciate everyone who stops by to read my blog and those that take the time to leave a comment to let me know they were here and what they think.

Have a wonderful day/night wherever you are! 🙂

Why I NEED To Write

writing-1508158

Surprise! I am actually writing  a post not based on a prompt. LOL This is something I have been thinking a great deal about lately and a great topic for writing in a blog post.

Hello everyone, today I thought I would talk to you about writing. More specifically I thought I would talk to you about what writing means to me.

I have wanted to write a book for as long as I can remember. Perhaps the reason I have not achieved that goal yet is because I lack the discipline to keep working on a manuscript.

Perhaps it is the fear of failure that keeps me from sticking my neck out and actually creating a manuscript to submit to publishers.

However, there is something deep inside of me will not let the dream of becoming a writer die.

Chances are one day I will conquer my fears, establish a routine and the discipline required to produce said manuscript.

The thing is I do not want to go to my grave with any regrets or wonder what could have been if only I had pushed through my reticence and freed the book that I know is within me begging to be written.

What would I write about? I can hear you asking so I will tell you; my life story. I have been through a lot of things I think people will be able to relate to.

Maybe someone out there (hopefully lots and lots of someones) will want to read my story. No, I am not someone famous, nor do I have a glamorous life that will make people want to flock to bookstores to buy my book but one can hope.

Still, I feel like I have something to say; something of value to contribute to the universe.

I have joked around with my friends before when discussing the thought of writing my life story. What has gotten the most laughs and nods of agreement, is the idea that librarians would not know whether to shelve it under fiction or non-fiction.

Apart from the whole book idea, there are a lot of other examples of writing that I do on a sort of regular basis.

There are things like this blog, shopping lists, journaling (not as regularly as I should; see comment about my lack of discipline above), sentiments written in cards, cheques (does anybody do that anymore?)  and so on.

Along with the various forms writing takes there are just as many media with which to write.

Personally, I prefer using a computer as editing is quick and easy; with practice, even these corrections on the fly will not slow down or interrupt your writing.

You must, however, remember to save your work often. A piece of advice I have had over the years and have never forgotten is this; save your work as often as you are willing to redo it.

In other words, save every half hour if you are willing to redo that half hour’s worth of work should something go wrong.

This is one thing I appreciate with WordPress; it autosaves quite frequently leaving me to concentrate on the words I am putting on the screen instead of worrying how long it has been since the last save.

I tend to think of writing in terms of producing a manuscript and submitting it to a publisher in hopes of getting a book deal. I want a book actually printed on paper and bound  between covers with a graphic on the front and my picture on the back.

I want a book actually printed on paper and bound  between covers with a graphic on the front and my picture on the back.

It has to have a tempting synopsis that will make readers want to pick up and purchase my book.

I would love to have Stephen King, my favorite author, say something kind about my book along the lines of he couldn’t put it down. 😉

I like, no, I prefer reading real books as opposed to e-books on a device like Kobo or Kindle or whatever.

This blog is not about reading, though, it is about writing and the only reason I bring up reading is to underline what form I want my writing to be published in.

Writing endures for years and years. I want that to be part of my legacy; passing on things I have learned and experienced in this life to generations into the future.

What I am curious about is how you feel about writing…is there a book inside of you wanting to get out into the world or is blogging as far as you want to take it?

Please let me know in the comment section what you think about writing; what it means to you and for you.

Thanks for once again stopping by my blog to read my thoughts on this subject. I really appreciate your support and your input. Have yourselves a wonderful day/night, as always. 🙂

Stephen King Is My Favorite Author

Do you have a favorite author? Ever since I found Stephen King’s books I have one! I don’t know what it is exactly that draws me to his books…perhaps it is his voice. It really doesn’t matter what the story is because it is the way he tells it. I do have a wide range of taste when it comes to books and reading material. I like biographies, medical texts, news, fiction, non-fiction…all of it. When it comes to favorite authors, however, there is only one for me. Some Stephen King aficionados refer to him as Sai King as a way to show utter respect for his talents. I just refer to him by name…I am what he terms a Constant Reader. I love how he puts messages in the back of most of his books to all of us constant readers. It makes me feel great knowing that there are things he wants to say to me.

Currently, I am reading IT – a great tome of a book. The pages number just over one thousand, in fact, I think that number is eleven hundred and thirty-eight. I am down to the last thirty or so pages. It was, and is, another great book by the master storyteller. The genre Stephen writes in is horror and IT is a “clown” that lives in the sewers and messes with people of the town. This creature is a shape shifter and can present himself (itself?) to people as anything it chooses. It can blend in and seem totally normal if it is trying to lure you in or if it has you in it’s sights it can appear as whatever scares you most. There are seven children who take it on and manage to scare It away by hurting it. After something like thirty years later when they are grown adults with separate lives living all over the United States It draws them back to their hometown meaning to take them on again and exact It’s revenge. I won’t go into further detail then that in case you would like to pick it up and read it for yourself.

After I am done with this book I will be embarking on a book my sister bought me for Christmas. Make Me by Lee Child which is his newest title. I am eager to read this book but since I was already well into the Stephen King book I had to wait until I was finished. I am not one that can read several books all at the same time. It is too hard for me to keep plots and characters separate. Lee Child is another author that can grab you by the imagination and refuse to let you go until you are finished the last page. I have read one other Lee Child book entitled Killing Floor, also bought for me by my sister. This author I could really get into too. I now have two of his books and must collect more. There is nowhere near the history I have with Stephen King but I can see Lee Child growing on me to that extent some years down the road. He is good at portraying Jack Reacher the main character of these novels. You get to really feel for Jack and what he goes through. I like Lee Child’s style. Well, on that note I am off to bed to read the last of It. I read just before sleep in order to wind down and make my eyes tired enough to close since my mind refuses to come out of overdrive. I wrote a post about that. LOL Good night all, sleep well and pick up a book. It is good for the soul and the mind. =)
